Swimming Comes Up Big Against Fresno State, Wins 145-117

Jan. 27, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State women's swim team overcame illness and fatigue from a tough week of practice to claim a 145-117 win over Fresno State in a non-conference meet Saturday morning at Stephens Natatorium.

The win improves the Beavers to 7-3 in dual meets this season (0-1 Pac-10), one more win would give OSU its highest victory total since the 1981-82 season, when the Beavers went 9-1.

Naya Higashijima and Paula Finlay each captured multiple wins, but perhaps the most exciting race of the day was the 400-yard individual medley.

With the Bulldogs within 122-104 with two races left, FSU jumped out to an early lead in the 400 IM, with Finlay in third and Birte Steven in fifth. However, Steven and Finlay began to narrow the gaps in the breaststroke, setting up a come-from-behind win for Finlay and a third-place finish for Steven, who was 0.26 seconds from taking second. Finlay won in a time of 4:32.16, and the Beavers moved out to a 134-111 lead to seal the win.

'That's the nice thing about having breaststrokers swimming the IM, is that if they get through the butterfly and backstroke, the breaststroke is where you break people,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'The fatigue settles in, and if the girls ahead of them don't have a solid breaststroke, that's where the mental aspect of the sport comes in. When you see someone making a move on you like that when you're tired, it makes it a lot harder to race. We just took them out of their game.'

Fresno State had drawn to within one at 85-84 after the 200 backstroke after OSU jumped out to an early 75-56 lead.

Higashijima, who along with Steven was fighting illness, captured the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:24.74, won the 200 fly in 2:05.22, and took the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:06.46.

'They've been sick the whole week, so they only made half the workouts,' Podkoscielny said. 'It was especially tough for Naya, since she had to swim the distance events. Everyone was a little tired, we've done a lot of speedwork recently, and their legs were shot. At the end of the races, they were having a hard time coming home, but they just had to swim through it. It builds character.'

In addition to her win in the 400 IM, Finlay took the 100 breaststroke - a race usually won by Steven - in a time of 1:06.49. The sophomore also swam a 2:23.19 to claim the victory in the 200 breaststroke.

Steven didn't miss a beat in her first 200 freestyle of the season, as she finished in 1:56.90 to earn nine points for the Beavers with the win.

Bonnie Renwick played a part in three OSU wins, as she won the 100 butterfly with a 59.38, as well as helping the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams to victories.

The 200 medley relay team of Suzanne Starkey, Birte Steven, Bonnie Renwick, and Audi Higuera won with a time of 1:47.71, while the squad of Starkey, Renwick, Erin Buckley, and Higuera took the 200 freestyle in 1:38.14.

The Beavers were urged on throughout the morning by a vocal crowd, which included University President Paul Risser and Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart.

'It was a fun crowd,' Podkoscielny said. 'We had a nice crowd, it was great to see people from the administration and from campus - there were a couple of professors, President Risser was here, coaches from other teams - so it was really nice. It means a lot to the swimmers to get that kind of support.'

'It was a good race,' Podkoscielny said. 'We have a lot of work to do with three weeks until Pac-10s.'

OSU will take this momentum into next weekend's two dual meets with Washington State. The Beavers host WSU on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., and then Saturday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. in two separate dual meets. Both meets are at Stephens Natatorium on the OSU campus.

'Washington State is usually our biggest rivalry, since we don't swim against the University of Oregon,' Podkoscielny commented. 'They will be, without a doubt, the toughest competition we'll face this season.'
