Cougars Fall to Matadors in Series Finale
Jan. 28, 2001
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The WSU Cougar offense that was displayed Saturday at Matador Field was nearly non-existent on Sunday, as Cal State Northridge beat WSU 6-4 in the series finale.
Thanks to solid efforts by Cougar pitchers Tyson Thompson and Lanakila Niles, WSU was able to keep the outcome in doubt until the final innings even though they managed only five hits for the day. Thompson started the game for the Cougs even though he was hit by a line drive in the first inning of Thursday's match-up.
Matador pitcher Merrill Dunn played in all four games of the series but had his best outing Sunday, gave up only two hits in 3.1 innings to earn the win. Dunn and closer Mike Frick gave up only one hit combined in the last four innings to seal the victory for Northridge.
The only offensive spark for the Cougars was off the bat of Cougar first baseman Stefan Bailie. Down 2-0 in the fifth inning, Bailie hit a grand slam off Matdor pitcher Kameron Loz, driving-in Van Delos Santos, Bookie Gates, and Evan Hecker. It was Bailie's first grand slam of his WSU career and his second home run in consecutive days.
The Matadors scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning as J.T. Stotts lead off the inning with his second home run of the year and Adam Nikolic scored on an error to tie the game. The Matadors added two insurance runs in the eighth as Niles walked in Eric Verbryke with the bases loaded and hit Phillip Archer one batter later to finalize the scoring.
