Women of Troy Defeat Arizona In Conference Opener

Los Angeles, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team (3-0, 1-0) won its Pac-10 opener with a 5-2 victory over No. 24 Arizona (0-1, 0-1) this afternoon (Jan. 27) at Marks Tennis Stadium.

The Women of Troy started strong in doubles play, winning all three matches. USC then quickly went up 4-0 when Maureen Diaz, Melissa Esmero and Tiffany Brymer each won their singles matches.

However, Arizona's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players came on strong for the Wildcats. In the No. 1 singles position the Wildcats' Michelle Gough defeated No. 9-ranked Jewel Peterson 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. At No. 2, Arizona's Debbie Larocque rallied to beat USC's Anita Loyola 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

USC will host Arizona State at noon on Sunday (Jan. 28) at Marks Tennis Satdium.
