Michael Ponikvar Wins High Jump At Razorback Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Stanford sophomore Michael Ponikvar (Crescent, Ontario) took first place in the high jump on Saturday at the prestigious Razorback Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas at the Randal Tyson Track Complex.

Ponikvar cleared a height of 7 feet-2 1/4 inches to win the event, which was his first competition since sitting out last year to train with the Canadian Olympic team.

Freshman Donald Sage (Elmhurst, IL) had a strong performance in the mile run, placing fourth in a time of 4:01.34. Gabe Jennings (Madison, WI) finished seventh in 4:05.87, while sophomore Seth Hejny (Grand Junction, CO) won the unseeded mile run in a time of 4:10.32.

Freshman Chris Emme (The Woodlands, TX) was Stanford's lone competitor in the 5,000 meters. Emme finished fourth in 14:31.37.

In the 3,000 meters, the Cardinal was paced by Tyson Hendricksen's (Kingwood, TX) eighth-place finish. He clocked in at 8:14.66. Following Hendricksen were Hejny (8:22.55) and Steve Loughlin (Portland, OR) (8:32.72).

Stanford placed third in the distance medley relay, clocking a 9:37.34.In the 800 meters, Stanford was led by sophomore Jonathan Stevens (Fremont, CA), who placed seventh in 1:51.96. Senior Ryan Carroll (Merced, CA) was 11th in 1:53.87 and junior Mark Hassell (Barstow, CA) was 14th in 1:56.14.

Chris Sprague (Eugene, OR) had two solid outings in the throwing events. He placed sixth in the shot put with a 53-5 1/2 and seventh in the weight throw with a 48-10 3/4. Nick Welihozkiy (Springfield, VA) came in fourth in the weight throw, recording a 57-5.

Junior Warrick McDowell (Spring, TX) was ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 47-7 1/4 and came in 21st in the long jump, recording a 21-1/2. Sophomore Milton Little (Portsmouth, RI) finished 13th in the long jump with a mark of 22-10 1/2. Little also placed fifth in the unseeded triple jump with a 47-5 3/4.

Junior Evan Kelty (West Linn, OR) finished 30th in the 200 meters in a time of 22:35, while sophomore Justin Williams (Worthington, OH) was 45th in 23.00.
