Top-Ranked Stanford Tennis Teams To Compete In Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships This Weekend

FARMERS BRANCH, Tex. - Stanford University tennis will be well represented at the Feb. 1-4 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships, the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club near Dallas.
Defending NCAA Champions, Alex Kim (Potomac, MD) and Laura Granville (Chicago, IL) will be the players to beat in the men's and women's singles, respectively. Granville is also the defending Rolex champion.
Also competing for the Cardinal in men's singles is K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA). Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL) are competing in men's doubles as are Kim and Hippensteel. Joining Granville in women's singles are Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV), Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) and Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ). Granville and Lastra are competing in women's doubles and Kalvaria and Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) are also teaming together.
The Cardinal women are fresh off of two Pac-10 victories over Washington State and Washington, which improved their overall record to 4-0. The Stanford men are also 2-0 overall with their wins coming over Oregon and Washington. The Rolex National Intercollegiates feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including qualifiers from ITA Regional Championships held across the country during the fall, the Rolex National Small college champions, the winners of the first two legs of the 2000-01 ITA Grand Slam (the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court and All-American Championships) and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 5,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and Rolex National Intercollegiate Championships.
