Ducks Finish Ninth at Ping-Arizona Invitational

Jan. 30, 2001

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Aaron Byers shot a final round 3-under par 68 to tie for fifth Tuesday at the Ping-Arizona Intercollegiate, played at the 6,776-yard, par-71 Raven at Sabino Springs Golf Course. As a team, Oregon finished ninth at plus-22. No. 16 USC won the event going away, shooting 19-under 833 compared to a 2-over 855 for second place California.

It was the best finish as a collegian for Byers (71-71-68-210), a junior from Albany who transferred to Oregon from Linn-Benton Community College. Byers finished sixth at last season's Northwest Collegiate Invitational. His final round 68 was also the lowest of his career. Byers was four strokes off the pace of medalist Alex Kuyumjian (68-67-71--206) of USC.

John Ellis finished the tournament with rounds of 71 and 70 to tie for 15th at 1-over and was the only other Duck in the top 20. Oregon's Chris Carnahan finished play shooting a 223 (73-76-74) to tie for 49th, while teammates Brandon Harnden (73-77-77--227) and Ben Auten (80-80-77--237) rounded out play finishing in 69th and 96th place, respectively.

Arizona State and Ohio State tied for third at 10-over, while No. 4 South Carolina was fifth at plus-11. Four stokes separated the next five teams including eighth-ranked Brigham Young in sixth (plus-19), Pepperdine (plus-20), 10th-ranked Arizona (plus-21), Oregon (plus-22) and Oregon State (plus-23).

The Ducks next compete Feb. 15-17 at the Taylor Made Waikaloa in Hawaii.
