No. 7-ranked Fruttero to Compete in Dallas
Jan. 30, 2001
Sophomore John Paul Fruttero will be participating in the Rolex Indoor Championships, Feb. 1-4, in Dallas, TX. The No. 7 singles player in the country, Fruttero has been playing the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup for the Bears. Currently holding an overall record of 11-4 (2-0 in dual match competition), the San Marino native hopes to establish himself as one of the top players in the country at this weekend's event.
Recently in Cal's 4-3 loss at Washington, Jan. 26, Fruttero grabbed a point at the No. 1 spot, defeating Matt Hanlin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The No. 24-rankded men were victorious the next day, defeating Oregon 5-2, as Fruttero tallied another victory at No. 1, downing Oded Tieg in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
In the fall, Fruttero reached the semifinals at the ITA All-American tournament in October, the second leg of the Grand Slam. Fruttero made his way to the semifinals by knocking off the No. 1 seed, Brian Vahaly of Virginia. In doing so, Fruttero became the first Cal player to advance to the semifinals since 1986. Cal is the only school in the country that can boast having two players reach at least the quarterfinals of the two opening legs of the ITA Grand Slam. No 22-ranked freshman Balazs Veress advanced to the quarterfinals of the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court championships in September.
