Alex Kim, K.J. Hippensteel Pick Up Opening Round Wins At ITA Indoor Championships

FARMERS BRANCH, Tex. - Stanford's K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA) and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD) each won their opening round singles matches today at the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at Brookhaven Country Club.
Hippensteel, ranked No. 52 in the latest ITA rankings, pulled out a 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-1 win over Duke's Andres Pedroso. Kim defeated Middle Tennessee's Daniel Klementz 6-4, 6-2. Both players advance to Friday's second round.
In doubles play, Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL) upset the tournament's top-seeded team of Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly from Virginia 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4). Montgomery and Vahaly are also the top-ranked team in the ITA rankings. Lipsky and Martin went on to win their quarterfinal match as well, defeating Portland's Kyle Kliegerman and John Portlock 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-5. The team is scheduled to play in the semifinals on Friday.
The team of Kim and Hippensteel came up short in its first round match. They fell to fourth-seeded Amer Delic and Graydon Oliver of Illinois 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
The tournament continues Friday morning, with the second round of singles play beginning at 8:30 a.m. (CST).
