Pac-10 Weekly Women's Basketball Chat (2/7/01)
Feb. 1, 2001
California senior guard Courtney Johnson will participate in an online chat Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. PT. The chat will be featured on the Pacific-10 Conference's official site, www.pac-10.org.
Johnson, who hails from Antioch, Calif., leads the Golden Bears in scoring (12.8 ppg), assists (3.0 apg) and steals (2.8 spg) this year. At the conference level, she ranks 11th in scoring and third in steals. Johnson looks to become the 16th player in Cal history to reach the 1000-point milestone. With 870 points, the 5-8 guard must average 11.8 ppg over the remaining 11 contests to accomplish that feat.
After climbing to No. 3 on Cal's all-time steals chart against Washington State, Jan. 25, Johnson has her sights set on the No. 2 spot. After beginning the season in sixth place with 197 swipes, she has moved up to third with 245, surpassing Jackie Lear's (1993-95) 238. Cynthia Cooke (1982-85) is second with 250, and Mazetta Garrett (1979-84) holds the school record with 295. At Johnson's current pace this season, she will leave Berkeley tied for No. 3 all-time on the Pac-10 steals ladder.
As a junior, Johnson earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 recognition and team MVP honors after leading Cal in scoring (11.7), steals (3.2), assists (3.1) and free throw percentage (.756). Johnson led the Pac-10 in steals last year, and three times in her career has grabbed eight steals in a game.
Fans may send in their questions for Johnson now, and they will be saved until the live chat begins. A full transcript of the chat will be posted at its conclusion. For a list of upcoming chats, check out the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Page at www.pac-10.org.
