#24 Men's Swimming Earns Three Event Titles At The 25th Annual Washington Open
Feb. 2, 2001
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The 24th-ranked men's swimming squad captured three events, including both relays, in the first full day of competition Friday at the 25th annual Washington Open at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center.
'This was a great day for us,' UW head coach Mickey Wender said. 'This meet falls at an awkward time for us and is really just an opportunity to get up and practice and do one last dress rehearsal before the Pac-10 championships.'
The UW men kicked off the night by sweeping first through third place in the 200 freestyle relay. The Husky team of Derek Rose (Forest Grove, Ore.), David Moilanen (Renton, Wash.), Tim Collins (Vancouver, Wash.) and Jamie Stone (Lake Stevens, Wash.) posted a first-place time of 1:23.42 to give the team their first win of the meet. Stone later added to his winning total by placing first in the 50 freestyle (20.88), just one one-hundredth of a second faster than teammate Rose (20.89).
Stone, Moilanen, freshman Justin Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.) and senior captain Francis Tam (Santa Clara, Calif.) completed the night for the Huskies with a winning time of 3:23.17 in the 400 medley relay.
On the women's side, sophomore Kim Harada (San Lorenzo, Calif.) placed second in the 50 freestyle (23.82), while also swimming the lead-off legs on both the team's fastest 200 freestyle (2nd - 1:37.60) and 400 medley (4th - 3:56.33) relays. Freshman Lisa Fanning (Bellevue, Wash.) rounded out the other top 10 finishers for the Huskies, recording a time of 24.85 for eighth place.
The meet was highlighted by the appearance of 2000 U.S. Olympic medalists Tom Wilkens and Megan Quann. Wilkens (Santa Clara Aquatic Club) won both the 500 freestyle (4:27.11) and the 200 individual medley (1:48.46 - meet record), while Megan Quann (Puyallup Aquatic) swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 400 medley relay.
On Thursday evening, freshman distance swimmer John Lyssand (Gig Harbor, Wash.) swam a U.S. senior national level qualifying time of 9:20.59 in the 1000-yard freestyle, placing third overall in the 40-swimmer field. Lyssand's teammates, freshmen Chris Monson (Seattle, Wash.) and Michael Quann (Puyallup, Wash.) placed 22nd and 28th in the 1000 free, while senior Janella Bart (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was the top Husky woman with a 12th-place finish (10:31.41). 'I'm really encouraged by Janella's performance,' Wender said. 'She's definitely back on track, and our freshmen are continuing to step up for us.'
The 25th annual Washington Open continues Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 9:30 a.m., and finals set for 5:30 p.m.
