Beavers Fall On Opening Day

Feb. 2, 2001

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Oregon State took a lead into the final four innings but couldn't hold it Friday afternoon and fell to Cal State-Northridge 17-7 in the Beavers' baseball season-opener at Matador Field. OSU (0-1 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) dropped to 65-27 all-time in Opening Day contests, the Feb. 2 date was the earliest-ever for an OSU baseball season-opener.

The Beavers and Matadors (4-2, 0-0 Big West) resume their three-game series Saturday afternoon and conclude it Sunday afternoon, both games begin at 1 p.m. and Sunday's game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Oregon State's loss came after the Beavers gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to fall behind 8-7, Cal State-Northridge then added five runs in the seventh inning and four more in the eighth. The defeat came after OSU had taken a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning, using four Matador errors to score a half-dozen unearned runs.

'We didn't stay focused on playing the game properly and aggressively after that first inning,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We didn't attack the game, and Northridge did. We had some opportunities to really put them away, but there were situations at the plate, in the field and on the mound where we didn't get it done.

'Those things left Northridge with a chance, and they came back and took us out of it. Now we have to come out Saturday and react to that.'

On Friday, the Beavers still clung to a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, OSU starter Thad Johnson hit Phillip Archer and walked No. 9 hitter Tim Coltey, Craig Hays came on for Oregon State to face the top of the order, J.T. Stotts.

On a two-ball, two strike pitch, Stotts lofted a drive over the left-centerfield wall to put the Matadors up 8-7. That was the start of a Cal State-Northridge outburst that produced 12 runs on nine hits in the final three innings against OSU relievers Hays, Paul Williams, Corky Wray and Jake Postlewait.

OSU had jumped in front 6-0 in the top of the first inning as the Matadors committed four errors. The Beavers capitalized with run-scoring singles by Josh Carter and Eric Stark, a two-run single by Will Hudson and a run-scoring groundout by Brian Barden.

Cal State-Northridge came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, one scoring on an error at shortstop by Hudson on a grounder that would have ended the inning. The Beavers allowed another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth when second baseman Zach Gordon erred on another potential inning-ending ground, that drew Cal State-Northridge within 7-5.

Johnson, a senior righthander, went 5 1/3 innings for the Beavers and allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk, striking out three. Stark was 2-for-3 for the Beavers while Carter and Bryan Ingram were both 2-for-4.

Stotts finished 5-for-6 with six RBIs, two homers and a double. Eric Verbryke chipped in a 4-for-5 day with five RBIs, a homer and two doubles.
