Stanford (3-8 overall) fell to the 18th-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs tonight at the Ford Center, 27-9. The Bulldogs faced stiff competition from the Cardinal with five of the six Fresno State wins decided by three points or less. In the ninth match at 285 pounds, sophomore Brad Selby (Paradise Valley, AZ/Saguaro) pinned 2nd-ranked Billy Blunt at 2:06.
With four Fresno State starters ranked in the top-20 nationally, the Bulldogs came out strong. Derek Hayes (#15 at 133 pounds), Nathan Vasquez (#15 at 157 pounds) and Stephen Abas (#1 at 125 pounds) earned a decision, a major decision and a technical fall, respectively.
The 174-pound bout proved exciting as freshman Garrett Johnston (McAlester, OK/McAlester) and Mike Mellor battled in overtime. Johnston took the victory in the 30-second tie breaker period with a 2-point near fall to give him the 5-3 win.
Stanford travels to San Francisco State tomorrow for the All Cal Invitational on Sat., Feb. 3 for the all day event. The Cardinal return home next weekend to close out its home season. Fri., Feb. 9 begins with a dual between Minnesota State - Mankato and Cal Poly at 5:30 p.m. in the Ford Center. The evening will continue with a meet between Stanford and Minnesota State - Mankato at 7 p.m. in the Ford Center. Stanford's final home meet will also close out its conference regular season on Sat., Feb. 10 against Cal Poly at 7 p.m. in the Ford Center.
