BERKELY, Calif. (AP) - Southern California looks to rebuild its momentum and get back in the Pac-10title hunt when it completes its Bay Area road trip against California onSaturday.

The No. 21 Trojans (15-5, 5-3) played top-ranked and unbeaten Stanford toughThursday before falling 77-71. Brian Scalabrine scored 17 points and DavidBluthenthal and Sam Clancy added 15 apiece for USC, which last defeated the No.1 team in the country on March 15, 1970.

'Staying with them for most of the game was nice, but we really wanted towin, so it was a disappointment,' Scalabrine said. 'We just have to bestronger than they are next time.'

Since beginning the season with eight straight wins, the Trojans have beeninconsistent and fallen to fifth in the Pac-10, three games behind Stanford.

Clancy leads USC with 18.4 points per game. Bluthenthal averages a team-high7.3 rebounds and Brandon Granville averages 6.5 assists.

Surging California (15-5, 6-2) has won 14 of its last 16 games and is comingoff a 92-63 rout of UCLA on Thursday. The stretch is the program's best since1992, when current NBA players Jason Kidd and Lamond Murray played for theGolden Bears.

Ryan Forehan-Kelly led a balanced attack with 16 points and California shot59 percent from 3-point range as the Bears raced to a 48-28 halftime lead.

'We've said all year long once we get up by 15, we can't let a team backin,' guard Sean Lampley said. 'When we got up tonight, we kept pushing theball, not relaxing.'

The Golden Bears have won 14 straight at home since losing to UCLA lastseason, when the Bruins overcame a 19-point first-half deficit and beat Cal83-62 at Haas Pavilion.

California is led offensively by Lampley, who averages 18.6 points per game.

The Golden Bears lead the all-time series with the Trojans 115-108 and haveswept the season series each of the past three years.
