No. 20 Oregon Splits Two Games at Southwest Texas State Invitational
Feb. 2, 2001
SAN MARCOS, Tex. -
The 20th-ranked University of Oregon softball team opened the 2001 season splitting two games in the Southwest Texas State Invitational Friday. The Ducks defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 5-0, in the first game before falling to host Southwest Texas State, 3-2.
Eugene junior Connie McMurren (1-0) allowed just two hits in seven innings of work, while sophomore Lisa Wangler, in her first game as a Duck, went 3-for-4, scoring a pair of runs.
The Ducks scored two unearned runs in the first inning before coming back with two more in the fifth on a foul ball, and sophomore Andrea Vidlund's RBI single.
'Connie threw a good ballgame,' said head coach Rick Gamez. 'And we had a good day offensively. Lisa really led the attack.'
Southwest Texas State, coached by former Oregon assistant Ricci Woodard, capitalized on a three-run first inning in the Oregon loss. After allowing three hits in the first inning, Vidlund pitched five frames of no-hit ball, and allowed only one walk in that span.
'We stranded 11 runners,' said Gamez. 'We need to be more disciplined at the plate, especially with runners in scoring position.'
Oregon will resume play Saturday in the Southwest Texas State Invitational, when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Baylor.
