Feb. 2, 2001
Los Angeles, Calif. -- The Cal Golden Bears snapped USC women's basketball's two-game win streak with a 61-55 victory over the Women of Troy at the Lyon Center on Friday night in front of 564. The win marks the first for Cal at USC since the 1989-90 season.
With the loss, USC drops to 3-5 in conference play and 8-10 overall, while Cal improves to 3-5 in the Pac-10, 7-11 overall.
Freshmen Aisha Hollans and Ebony Hoffman led the Women of Troy with 14 and 10 points apiece. Hoffman also added eight rebounds in the effort. The Bears were guided by senior Courtney Johnson who scored a game-high 22 points. Cal center Ami Forney recorded her fourth double-double (second consecutive) of the season with 12 points and 10 boards.
The Trojans trailed by as many as 11 points (17-6) at the start of the first half after enduring a nine-minute field goal drought. But with two consecutive jumpers by forward Carmen Krause, the Women of Troy took the lead and eventually entered the break with a six point advantage, 29-23.
Cal knotted the score 33-33 in just over five minutes into the second half, but a 12-2 USC run fueled by consecutive three-pointers, gave USC its largest lead of the game, 45-35, at 9:17. Despite the burst the Trojans could not maintain the effort, allowing Cal to tie the score at 53-53 and 55-55 with 3:28 and 2:13 left on the clock. The Golden Bears would go on to take the win after hitting 4-of-4 at the line and a lay-up for the six-point edge in the final two minutes.
On Sunday (Feb. 4) USC hosts Stanford at 3 p.m. at the Sports Arena. The Pac-10 match-up will be televised live on Fox Sports West and aired on KMPC-AM 1540.
