Freshman Ryan Schroyer Strikes Out Nine In ASU Debut To Lead Baseball To 11-2 Win Over Southern Utah.

Feb. 3, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 6 Arizona State University Sun Devil baseball team used two big innings and a strong nine-strikeout pitching performance from freshman starter Ryan Schroyer in a 11-2 win over Southern Utah Saturday afternoon in front of 2,713 fans at a sun-basked Packard Stadium.

The win is the third straight for the Sun Devils and improves their season record to 3-1. Southern Utah opens their season with their third straight loss and are now winless in 17 career games vs. the Sun Devils. The fourth and final game of the college baseball series concludes tomorrow with first pitch at 1 p.m.

Schroyer (Oracle, Ariz.) looked strong and commanding in his ASU debut. The high school All-American and 16th-round draft choice of the Detroit Tigers recorded the first six outs of his college career in style, striking out the side in the first and second innings. The hard-throwing Schroyer lasted 4.2 innings to pick up the win, allowing only eight hits and striking out nine.

What has shaped up to be a solid pitching corps, the ASU hurlers have combined for 36 strikeouts in the last two games. The Sun Devil bullpen was once again strong, with Bryce Kartler, Eric Doble, Mike Esposito and Aaron Klusman combining to allow only three hits over the last 4.1 innings. The best news of the day came from Esposito (Las Vegas) who made his first appearance in over a year after having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Klusman, a redshirt freshman from Phoenix, continues to be the surprise of the year, striking out the side in the ninth and now has seven in three combined innings.

ASU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead scoring single tallies in each the first and second frames. Senior All-American slugger Casey Myers (Case Grande) pushed home the Devils' first run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Freshman designated hitter Jeremy West (Las Vegas) continued his torrid weekend at the plate in the second, staking ASU to the 2-0 lead after he doubled and eventually scored on a hit-by-pitch to Brooks Conrad.

The Sun Devils exploded for four runs in the fifth by sending nine batters to the plate. Freshman left fielder Steve Garrabrants (Phoenix) plated two runs with a sharp single up the middle and senior third baseman Mike Lopez (Glendale) followed the very next at-bat with a double down the left field line to give ASU a 6-0 cushion. The Devils tacked on three more runs in the sixth, with Myers' two run double to left field providing most of the damage.

'Out pitching staff is really battling out there and that is a huge step for out team this early in the season,' said ASU head coach Pat Murphy. 'It is great to see Espo (Mike Esposito) out there knowing how much he is going to help out team when he gets back to 100% from his injury. Our offense is a long way away, but as a team we are starting to gel and moving in the right direction.'

Myers ended the day with a 2-for-4 game and three RBI. Lopez upped his season average to .438 with a pair of doubles and four RBI. Southern Utah was led by leadoff hitter Chad Grundy who was 2-for-5 with a run scored and third baseman Curtis Jacobsen who was 2-for-4.
