Granville, Lastra Capture Doubles Title At ITA Indoor Championships

FARMERS BRANCH, Tex. - Stanford's team of Laura Granville (Chicago, IL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) was crowned the doubles champion of the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam at the Brookhaven Country Club.
Granville and Lastra defeated the top-seeded and No. 2- ranked team of Paola Palencia and Ipek Senoglu of Pepperdine 6-2, 6-3 in the championship match Saturday afternoon. The win concluded Granville and Lastra's weekend with a perfect 4-0 record.
In other doubles action, Stanford's Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) won the consolation final. They defeated Ashley Hedberg and Jessica Roland of Texas A&M 7-6 (3), 7-5 in the semifinals to set up a showdown with a duo from Georgia. Barnikow and Kalvaria came from behind in the championship match to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Lori Grey and Aarthi Venkatesan. The Cardinal duo lost its first match of the tournament, and then rattled off three-straight wins for the title.
In singles play, Granville won her semifinal match over Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Granville, the defending tournament champion, will look to add to her winning streak of 53, dating back to last season in tomorrow's final. Granville is attempting to become the first woman to repeat at the Rolex as well as Stanford's fourth straight champion. She will face Duke's Ansley Cargill, who is ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA rankings, for the title.
