Mistakes Cost Beavers In 15-11 Loss

Feb. 3, 2001

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Oregon State mistakes cost the Beavers for a second straight day Saturday as the Beavers fell to Cal State-Northridge 15-11 in non-league baseball at Matador Field. The Matadors scored nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the win.

OSU (0-2 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) concludes its three-game series against Cal State-Northridge (5-2, 0-0 Big West) on Sunday at 1 p.m., the game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Saturday, the Beavers left 14 runners on base and committed six errors. The Matadors used five walks and a hit batter to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh and tie the game 10-10, after OSU pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, Oregon State committed a pair of errors to open the door for a five-run inning for Cal State-Northridge.

'We scored 11 runs, and that should be enough to win a ballgame,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'But we could have scored 16 runs today. We shouldn't have to do that, though. We had chances to make things happen at the plate, on the mound and in the field and we didn't do it. This is the first weekend we've been on the field in a true game situation, and some things have happened that have exposed that.'

The Beavers did get a good pitching debut from righthander Ben Rowe, a freshman from Perth, Australia, who arrived in Corvallis during the holidays. Rowe was starting in place of senior lefty Scott Nicholson, who was suspended for the weekend series for violating an OSU athletic department policy.

Rowe went five innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits and no walks, striking out two.

'Ben's only been with us for about four weeks, and he went out and did a great job for us today,' Casey said. 'But we've had to use some other young pitchers this weekend who are getting a real orientation to baseball at this level.'

After allowing a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning, Oregon State roared back for seven runs in the top of the third. The first eight Beaver hitters of the inning reached base, and OSU got a two-run single from Andy Jarvis, a run-scoring single by Curtis Davis, bases-loaded walks by Josh Carter, Zach Gordon and Eric Stark and a sacrifice fly by Bryan Ingram.

Cal State-Northridge got within 7-4 on back-to-back solo homers by Tim Arroyo and Aaron McKenzie in the bottom of the third. The Beavers pushed the lead to 10-4 in the top of the fifth on Stark's RBI single and Josh Carter's two-run double.

The Matadors were back within 10-6, though, as the Beavers left the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings. That kept Cal State-Northridge within striking distance, and it took advantage in the final innings.

Every Oregon State starter had at least one hit, with Carter going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and RBIs. Chris Biles was 3-for-5 while Ingram was 2-for-4, Davis was 2-for-5 and Brian Barden was 2-for-6.

For Cal State-Northridge, Arroyo was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, Jeremy Hanson homered and drove in four runs and Eric Ballew had a three-run homer. Eric Verbryke and Robert Smith were both 2-for-4 and J.T. Stotts was 2-for-5.
