No. 6 Softball Powers Pass Alumni, 5-0

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Behind a three-run homerun by junior Erica Beach, the sixth-ranked Arizona State softball team shutout the alumni, 5-0, this afternoon at Farrington Stadium.
The game was scoreless through three and a half innings until the Sun Devils scored once in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Missy Hixon started the inning by getting on base on an error. Junior Kirsten Voak followed with a single to advance Hixon to second. Freshman Phelan Wright then singled up the middle to bring Hixon around for the score.
The Sun Devils then unloaded four runs on the alumni team in the fifth inning. Freshman Kristin Farber singled to left field and then stolen second base. Junior Nichole Thompson hit an infield single to advance Farber to third base. Sophomore Kara Brun followed with a single to left, scoring Farber and advancing Thompson to second. Beach then took a 1-1 pitch and launched the ball over the 210-foot center field wall to score three more runs.
Top hitters for the Sun Devils were, Farber (3-for-3 with a run and a stolen base), Thompson (2-for-3 with a sacrifice and a run scored), Wright (2-for-3 with an RBI), Beach (1-for-3 with a homerun, a run scored and three RBIs), Brun (1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored), Hixon (1-for-1 with a double and a run scored).
The Sun Devils used four different pitchers to hold the alumni to six hits. Two-time All-American Voak pitched the first three innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Beach pitched the next two innings, allowing one hit while striking out two. Junior Shiloh Talanoa threw the sixth inning giving up one hit, while freshman Kristen Swetel closed the seventh inning limiting the alumni to a single hit. Swetel ended the game after gloving a line drive back to her then throwing to first base to double up the runner.
Up next, Arizona State will play Mesa Community College in an exhibition game Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Farrington Stadium. ASU will then begin the regular season as they face Utah State at 3:30 p.m. at the Rose Mofford Complex.
