No. 13 OSU Wrestling Roughed Up By No. 8 Oklahoma

Feb. 4, 2001

MARLOW, Okla. - - Oregon State's top three wrestlers recorded wins on Saturday against No. 8 Oklahoma, but those were the only victories OSU could muster, as the Beavers fell to the Sooners, 32-11 in non-conference action.

The closest No. 13 OSU came to Oklahoma was 6-5, when the Beavers' 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen, ranked sixth nationally, recorded a technical fall over Tony Moore by a score of 16-1 in the meet's second match to improve his record to 25-5.

Jorgensen, a senior, recorded two three-point near falls and a two-point near fall in the match.

OSU's 149-pounder Casey Horn suffered a defensive pin in the opening match by No. 8 Jared Frayer in three minutes, 53 seconds, giving OU a 6-0 lead. Horn was making an offensive move, but rolled on his back in the process and Frayer then held Horn to the mat to earn the pin.

Eighth-ranked Nathan Coy disposed of No. 10 Michael Barger in the 174-pound bout by a score of 9-5 as the Beavers moved within two points at 10-8 with Coy's win, but would get no closer. Coy improved his record to 26-7 on the year.

The heavyweight match saw No.11 Jason Cooley take care of No. 9 Leonce Crump for OSU's only other win on the afternoon - a 4-2 decision.

'We gave up three falls,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'You can't do that against a good team. We were capable of doing much better in this meet, so I'm disappointed. We need to pick it up.

'I give credit to the University of Oklahoma, they were more aggressive,' Wells continued. 'They came out and took it to us. We need to start coming out a little faster - they're a good team, but we're not going out and attacking, and we're coming up short.'

Michael Delaney went into the third round of his 125-pound match with Matt Ridings in a scoreless tie, before Ridings got a point for an escape with 1:52 left in regulation. Ridings took Delaney down 46 seconds later to go up 3-0 at 1:06, before Delaney escaped with 47 seconds remaining to make it 3-1. The sophomore was unable to bring Ridings down for the tie, and took a 4-1 setback after another point was tacked on for OU's riding time.

The following match was equally competitive, as OSU's Ben Richards had the 133-pound match tied at four apiece at 1:50 in the second period before succumbing by a final of 7-5.Jed Pennell took a 13-2 major decision by No. 6 Robbie Waller in the 165-pound bout, as did Isaac Weber in the 184-pound match by a score of 12-2.

OSU's Shane Cunanan - at 141 pounds - and Jason Lovell - at 197 - were pinned in 1:30 and 1:47, respectively.

'Richards and Delaney wrestled well,' Wells said. 'They kept it close, but they needed to seize some moments and take advantage of some opportunities.'

OSU's next match is Friday, Feb. 9, when the Beavers continue their road swing with a stop at Fresno State. OSU is then on to Cal State-Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 10 at noon, and then Cal State-Fullerton at 7:30 that night.
