Softball Defeats Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly at Early Bird Classic

SAN JOSE - UCLA improved its record to 5-0 on Sunday at the Spartan Early Bird Classic with victories over Cal State Northridge and Cal Poly on the second day of tournament play. UCLA defeated the Matadors 7-0, and beat Cal Poly 10-2 in six innings. A scheduled game against host San Jose State was not completed.

In the day's opener, the Bruins scored four runs in the first inning and a fifth run in the second. Freshman Claire Sua hit UCLA's first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the bottom of the first inning. Amanda Freed pitched the three-hit shutout, earning her second victory of the season.

Against Cal Poly, the Bruins won a shortened game, earning the run-rule victory with 10 runs on 12 hits. Tairia Mims and Stacey Nuveman both hit three-run homers in the game, with Stephanie Swenson earning the pitching victory.

The Bruins return to action on Wednesday night with a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm. UCLA will then play their home opener on Saturday, February 10 with a 1 pm first pitch against San Diego at Easton Stadium.
