Feb. 4, 2001
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The University of Washington swimming teams finished first (men) and second (women) respectively, at the 25th annual Washington Open at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center. The 24th-ranked UW men won 10 event titles over the four days of competition, which ended Sunday evening.
The Husky men's team of Justin Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), Derek Rose (Forest Grove, Ore.), David Moilanen (Renton, Wash.) and Francis Tam (Santa Clara, Calif.) opened the day by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:05.94. The relay win was the Huskies fifth in as many chances over the four-day meet.
Washington also had two individual event winners as sophomore Tim Collins (Vancouver, Wash.) continued to improve in the short freestyle events, coming away with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.53. Tam, one of the team's two senior captains, capped the night by winning the last event, the 200 butterfly, in a team season-best time of 1:52.30.
On the women's side, the UW women's 400 free relay of Kim Harada (San Lorenzo, Calif.), Lisa Fanning (Bellevue, Wash.), Melody Staubitz (Gardnerville, Nev.) and Evelyn Hingsbergen (Elk Grove, Calif.) placed third in 3:32.22. Harada later added the team's other top-five finish, finishing fifth in the 100 freestyle in 52.38.
Earlier in the morning preliminaries, four meet records fell in the men's and women's 200 breaststroke and the 200 butterfly. Puyallup Aquatics' Megan Quann posted a time of 2:11.02 in the 200 breaststroke, beating her previous record set in 1999 of 2:15.52, while Erik Scalise of Reno Aquatic Club broke the men's event record with a time of 2:03.36. In the 200 butterfly, 2000 U.S. Olympian Tom Wilkins, representing Santa Clara Swim Club, recorded a meet record time of 1:50.14, and Tacoma's Dana Kirk swam the 200 fly in 2:00.73.
