HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The Bears coach is in his second season at Cal and has a career record of 28-28 (.500)...Esquer, 35, became only the 10th coach in the long history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999...Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program...Esquer comes to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine since 1996...prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96...a shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha...he also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations...

BEAR NOTES: The California baseball team began the 2001 season with a three-game series sweep of Santa Clara (7-3 Feb. 2 at Santa Clara, 4-3 Feb. 3 at Cal, 7-1 Feb. 4 at Santa Clara)... It was the first time Cal had swept a three-game series since sweeping Washington State, Mar. 14-16, 1998... In the game one victory, Cal was paced by junior starter Trevor Hutchinson and the hitting of junior college transfer Carson White, freshman third baseman Conor Jackson and senior first baseman Clint Hoover...Hutchinson pitched 6.0 innings with six hits, one run, no walks and five strikeouts...White, a transfer from Fresno City College, went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple, Jackson, in his first collegiate game, went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI and Hoover was 2-for-5 with an RBI...Cal defensive highlights included freshman Brian Horwitz throwing out a runner at the plate from left field and White throwing a runner out at the plate after a relay throw from senior center fielder Curtis Johnson...in the second win, Cal scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, highlighted by freshman pinch-hitter Noah Jackson's bases loaded one-out RBI single...the Bears were down, 3-2, entering the ninth when Horwitz led off with a single...after senior right fielder Rob Meyer's sacrifice bunt advanced Horwitz to second, Johnson hit a single down the third base line, scoring Horwitz...Santa Clara ended up loading the bases with two intentional walks, setting up Jackson's heroics...senior David Cash got the win (1.0 innings, two hits, one run, one strikeout), but the pitching star was junior right-hander Ryan Atkinson (7.0 innings, three hits, two runs, no walks, six strikeouts), who made his first appearance since 1999 season after recovering from Tommy John surgery...Meyer had tied the game, 2-2, with a lead-off homer in the seventh and threw out a Santa Clara batter who had rounded first base too far in the ninth...the Bears were able to win the third game behind freshman starter Brian Montalbo and the hitting of Horwitz, Hoover , Meyer and freshman catcher Chris Grossman...Montalbo, who was a fourth round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves out of Dimond High School in Anchorage, AK, pitched 5.0 innings with no runs, six hits, two walks and three strikeouts in his first start at Cal...Horwitz went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Hoover was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the ninth inning, Meyer was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Grossman, making his first start behind the plate for the Bears, went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI...
