Hampton Drafted by San Diego
Feb. 5, 2001
Los Angeles -- The San Diego Spirit selected UCLA women's soccer player Karissa Hampton (Tacoma, WA) in the first round of Sunday's WUSA Supplemental Draft, brining the total number of UCLA players in the WUSA to six.
Hampton, who was selected sixth overall out of 32 players drafted Sunday, joins fellow seniors Venus James and Tracey Milburn as 2000 Bruins on WUSA rosters. In December's inaugural WUSA Draft, Milburn was taken in the ninth round by the Washington Freedom and James was selected in the 11th round by the Bay Area Cyber Rays.
A first-team All-Pac-10 selection, Hampton was named to the All-Tournament team at the 2000 NCAA College Cup after helping the Bruins reach the NCAA finals and finish the season with a No. 2 national ranking. She was the leader on a Bruin defense that ranked No. 1 in the Pac-10 and fourth nationally, surrendering just 10 goals in 24 games this season.
Hampton will join former Bruins Traci Arkenberg-Gatell and Joy Fawcett on the San Diego Spirit roster. San Diego took Arkenberg-Gatell, a Bruin letterwinner from 1994-97, in the seventh round of December's inaugural draft. Fawcett, who played at collegiately at Cal but was UCLA's head coach from 1993-97, was allocated to the Spirit as a member of the U.S. Women's National Team.
