Shantay Legans Diary
Feb. 5, 2001
What a roller-coaster ride the team went on this weekend! Way up and then way down. The fans were great at both games. The noise was just awesome Thursday and Saturday, and it feels real good to have the kind of fan support we do. Coach Braun said it before and I agree with him, we have the best fans in the country. As for the games, after the UCLA game the team felt like we could do no wrong, and I think that's what the problem was going into the USC game.
I feel we matched up pretty well against UCLA. The game we played against South Florida really helped us against the UCLA press. We broke it easily, and the coach's plan to have Lampley handle the ball and then get it to me on the second pass most of the time worked great. Lampley can handle the ball for a man his size, and he made good decisions with the ball. Coach had us prepared for the game, and everyone played hard and executed well. We played with confidence and took the game at the Bruins. When we play and execute like that, I think it is very hard for anyone to beat us.
UCLA has a lot of talented players, and Earl Watson knows how to play the point. He's one of the better point guards I've played against. Everyone on our team played well the big men took care of business, the wings were hitting, Donte made some good plays and Lampley was awesome. I give a lot of credit to the practice team as they ran us very hard all week. The win was a good one.
The only problem with winning like that is that the team felt all we had to do was show up and USC would roll over. The only guy that came to play against USC was Lampley. 10 for 12 from the floor is getting it done. Coach Braun and the other coaches kept telling us we needed to be ready and had a good game plan for us, but we didn't start playing until the last 10 minutes of the second half. Too little, too late. When I picked up the 2 fouls early, I felt I let the team down. There are no excuses for a loss like that. If we don t bring energy or intensity to the floor against a talented team like USC, we will lose every time.
We didn't execute, our defense was sloppy, Sam Clancy and Jeff Trepagnier are for real, and Brandon Granville is a heck of a point guard. I hate to lose and so does the rest of the team, so hopefully, we can remember the feeling for the rest of league and bring the energy and intensity to the floor every single game from now on.
The team really misses Dennis and I hope he gets well quick and can come back and help get us to the NCAA's. It's real hard when one of your leaders isn't there. That goes for Ryan also, he is a very important part of the team and we need him on the floor at the Oregons.
We've got to practice hard and with a purpose this week for the games up in Oregon. The coaches will have us ready - we just need to execute the game plan and produce. None of the games in league are gimmes, and we have to play hard and show up for each one. If we play up to the level I know we can for BOTH games, we will come home with 2 Ws for the coaches and the fans.
