Washington Hosts Arizona State, Pepperdine, and TCU in 2001 Husky Invitational
Feb. 8, 2001
This Week: The Washington men's tennis team, currently ranked 25th by the ITA, will play No. 12 Pepperdine in the first day of the Husky Invitational at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. Also on Sunday, No. 7 TCU will face No. 21 Arizona State at 11 a.m. The winners and losers of both matches will play each other on Monday, Feb. 12, with play beginning at 10 a.m. Washington, win or lose, will play at 1:30 p.m.
Last Week: Washington (4-2, 1-1) took on No. 40 Tulsa and No. 35 San Diego State in their first road action of the season. The Huskies were narrowly defeated by the Hurricanes of Tulsa, going down 3-4. Husky duo Dillon Ruby and Ari Strasberg defeated Timperley/Sebastyanski in a tie-breaker, 9-8. Facing San Diego State in the second day of action at the Tulsa Invitational, Washington earned revenge on the Aztecs, who knocked them out of play last season, by easily taking care of the men from California, 6-1. Singles victories were earned by Matt Hanlin, Andy Posavac, Jeremy Berman, Ari Strasberg, and Marius Lunde.
Last Season: The 1999-2000 men's tennis team finished last year with a 15-9 overall record, 3-4 in the Pac-10, and ranked 33rd in the ITA's final polls. Washington received their sixth-consecutive post-season berth, competing against No. 26 San Diego State in the NCAA Championships. The Huskies started out the day strong as two of the three doubles teams won (Berman/Posavac d. Maiberger/Pest 8-6 and Hanlin/Woolley d. Coren/Hasson 8-6). In singles play, both Jeremy Berman and Mark Woolley defeated their opponents (Berman d. Webster 6-2, 6-4, Woolley d. Hasson 6-3, 0-6, 6-4), but the team couldn't hold on in the end, losing to the Aztecs, 3-4.
Rising Anger: With 15 wins last season, head coach Matt Anger moved up to No. 3 on UW's all-time list for wins in a career with 91, surpassing Windy Langlie's mark of 79 total wins (1931-33 and 1947-60). Anger needs only 15 more victories to tie Chip Zimmer for second place with 106 career wins. He also ranks third in winning percentage at .640 (91-52).
Berman on the Move: Jeremy Berman's victory over San Diego State's Matt Bere (6-4, 6-3) places him in fifth place on UW's all-time list for singles wins in a career with 70.
Progressive Posavac: Senior Andy Posavac moved up a notch with his doubles victory over Kintz/Dmytruk of Cal (8-1). He is now tied for eighth place with Mark Woolley (1997-00) on UW's all-time list for doubles wins in a career with 54.
The New Look: Over the past summer, the Nordstrom Tennis Center was revamped to showcase the ATP-style purple courts. The ATP tour experimented with the new courts last summer with events in both Toronto and Cincinnati and found the color to be beneficial for both players and spectators to follow the ball. Washington is now only the third venue to feature the new courts.
Next Week: Washington will host the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships beginning on Thursday, February 15th and concluding on Sunday, February 18th.
