Women's Swimming, Diving Hosts UCLA
Feb. 8, 2001
LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 USC women's swimming and diving team (3-3, 1-3) hosts crosstown rival No. 6 UCLA on Saturday (Feb. 10) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium at 1 p.m.
Among the leaders for USC heading into the meet is junior Katie Meyer, who has recovered from back injuries from a year ago to become the Trojans' top backstroker this season.
As a freshman, Meyer (from Fort Washington, Penn.) earned All-American honorable mention honors by taking 14th in the 200-yard back at the 1999 NCAA Championships. She also was a two-time finalist at the Pac-10s in the back that year. But as a sophomore, injuries to her back slowed her down and she failed to make an NCAA championship appearance.
Now healthy again, Meyer, a 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials participant, has looked strong. Her times of 56.23 in the 100 back and 2:00.45 in the 200 back are both NCAA consideration marks. She has also secured a spot as one of the team's most valuable members on the medley relay.
As far as the most versatile swimmer for USC this year, sophomore Michala Kwasny would take the honors. She has posted USC's fastest times in the 400 IM (4:15.02), 200 fly (1:58.53) and 200 breast (2:16.70). Her times in the 400 IM and 200 fly are both NCAA automatics. Kwasny, a two-time 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials finalist, also has NCAA consideration times in the 1650 free (16:49.41), 200 IM (2:00.84) and the 100 fly (56.00).
Sophomore Asa Sandlund, a native of Sweden and one of the finest distance swimmers in the country, has USC's top times in the 500 (4:49.64, NCAA consideration), 1000 (9:56.28) and 1650 free (16:30.46, NCAA consideration) and junior Kristin MacGregor has the Trojans' fastest marks in the 100 (51.48) and 200 free (1:50.77, NCAA consideration), 200 IM (2:00.75, NCAA consideration) and the 100 breast (1:03.12).
Senior co-captain Corrie Murphy has posted NCAA consideration times in the 200 IM (2:02.83) and in the 400 IM (4:17.73). Sophomore Jennifer Parmenter has an NCAA consideration time in the 400 IM (4:20.94) while freshman Jana Krohn has posted NCAA consideration times in the 100 (55.61) and 200 fly (2:01.43).
USC is 12-11 all-time against UCLA.
