Cal Baseball Defeats BYU, 5-3
Feb. 9, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - The California baseball evened its series versus Brigham Young, defeating the Cougars, 5-3, Friday at Evans Diamond. The Bears, who fell to BYU, 2-1, Thursday, improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Cougars go to 5-4 overall.
Cal was led by the strong pitching of senior David Cash (2-0) and freshman Matt Brown. Cash, who struggled early against BYU, walking three batters and giving up a run in the first inning, recovered to pitch 6.0 innings with seven hits, three runs, four walks and a career-high nine strikeouts. Brown replaced Cash in the seventh inning and earned his first collegiate save, pitching 3.0 innings with two hits, no runs, no walks and five strikeouts.
After the Bears were down, 1-0, they responded with three runs in the third inning off of BYU starter Jeff Stearman (0-2, 7.7 innings, seven hits, five runs, three earned runs, two walks, six strikeouts). Cal's freshman catcher Chris Grossman led off the inning with a single, and then after Brad Smith fouled out to third base, the Bears tacked on four straight hits with RBI singles from sophomore David Weiner and freshman Conor Jackson, and a sacrifice fly from senior Clint Hoover.
BYU came back to tie the game, 3-3, with two runs in the top of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from Shane Belliston and Matt Carson. The Bears were able to take the lead again in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI ground out by Jackson. Cal was finally able to get an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by junior second baseman Carson White.
At the plate, the Bears were led by Chris Grossman, who was 2-for-3. Grossman, a redshirt freshman, began his collegiate career with five consecutive hits before finally grounding out to shortstop in the sixth inning. It is believed that no other Cal baseball player has ever began his college career with five consecutive hits. Belliston, Carson and Doug Jackson had two hits apiece for BYU.
Cal will next host Brigham Young in the third game of the three-game series, Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
