Hartmann Runs NCAA Qualifying Mark in 5,000.
Feb. 9, 2001
AMES, Iowa -- A snowstorm may have stopped many of his teammates, but not sophomore Jason Hartmann who posted Oregon first men's NCAA qualifying mark of 2001 at Friday's Iowa State Classic.
The two-time harrier All-American finished third in the men's 5,000 meters in a personal best time of 14:05.72, trailing two other Pac-10 rivals, Stanford's Jonathon Riley (first, 13:52.20) and Louis Luchini (second, 13:53.87). Hartmann's time improved on his outdoor personal best of 14:22.25 from the Oregon Invitational last April, and his previous indoor best of 14:47.44 from the 2000 Iowa State Open.
His time also easily meets the NCAA provisional standard of 14:18.15 and was a few ticks short of the NCAA automatic mark of 13:58.15. Since Iowa State's track facility, the Lied Recreational Athletic Center, features an oversized 300-meter track, Hartmann's time may be adjusted to 14:07.37 on the NCAA qualifying list which would tentatively rank him ninth in the nation based on marks entering the weekend, although most of this weekend's races are set for Saturday.
Looking back over qualifying marks in the 5,000 from recent years, Hartmann's time would have qualified him for the NCAA finale three of the past four years.
The rest of the 16 Duck men that were entered in hurdles, sprints and field events will not compete after their flight from Chicago to Des Moines, Iowa was delayed Thursday evening, before roads from Des Moines to Ames were closed Friday morning due to winter conditions.
The women's track and field team competes at the McDonald's Invitational, Saturday, Feb. 10, and the Duck men's team competes next weekend at the Holiday Inn Invitational in Reno, Nevada, Sat., Feb. 17.
