Wrestling Wins Fifth Straight with 25-13 Victory Over Penn

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 14th-ranked Arizona State wrestling squad turned in its fifth-straight victory with a 25-13 win against Pennsylvania Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. ASU improves its overall record to 10-3, while Penn falls to 5-6.

Sparking the Sun Devils, junior Dana Holland pulled an upset victory over No. 14 Joe Henson at 149 pounds, while sophomore All-American Eric Larkin pinned Dan Mousetis and junior David Douglas earned a major decision victory over Jeff Eveleth.

Penn led off with an early victory at 125 pounds, when Mason Lenhard earned a 19-7 major decision over redshirt-freshman Chris Knox. But it was Douglas at 133 pounds who quickly evened the score with a major decision of his own over Eveleth, 15-5.

At 141 pounds, Larkin wasted no time giving the Sun Devils a lead they would never relinquish, pinning Mousetis in 2:45. Holland extended ASU's team lead to 13-4 with an exciting 12-9 upset of Henson at 149. At 157 pounds, sophomore Rocky Smart, ranked No. 13, took No. 2 Yoshi Nakamura down to the wire and nearly pulled an upset of his own. In the end, it was Nakamura who prevailed in overtime, 2-1, with an escape.

ASU then retained its momentum with three straight wins beginning with senior All-American Steve Blackford's 4-2 decision over Penn's Tim Ortman at 165. With the victory, No. 4 Blackford moves into sole possession of fourth-place on the ASU all-time wins list with 128.

Junior Curtis Owen, ranked No. 20 at 174 pounds, earned a 9-3 decision over Josh Henson and senior R.D. Pursell, ranked No. 13 at 184, edged Marcus Schontube 4-3.Penn won only its third bout of the night when 10th-ranked Mike Fickell pinned redshirt-freshman Andy Swanson in 1:45 at 197 pounds. Eleventh-ranked sophomore heavyweight Kellan Fluckiger put the icing on the team victory for the Sun Devils with a 7-0 decision over Mike Faust.

ASU will pack its bags tomorrow and travel to Ames, Iowa for a match with No. 4 Iowa State, Sunday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. CST.
