Huskies Fall To Arizona State, 89-57

TEMPE, Ariz. - Tommy Smith tied the Pac-10 accuracy record, making11-of-11 shots, and scored a career-high 24 points as Arizona State routedWashington 89-57 Saturday night.

Alton Mason had 14 of his 20 points in the second half, helping the SunDevils avoid a repeat of their debacle on Thursday. They blew a 17-point leadin a 58-57 loss to Washington State in their previous game.

Smith, a sophomore, tied the record of UCLA's Marques Johnson, who made 11field goals without a miss against California on Feb. 27, 1976. Oregon State'sSteve Johnson was 13-of-13 against Hawaii-Hilo on Dec. 5, 1979 - the record fora Pac-10 player in a non-conference game.

Smith, who also had seven rebounds, had 10 field goals 7:04 into the secondhalf, then went to the bench at the 9:32 mark when he picked up his fourthfoul. About five minutes later, he re-entered the game.

He passed up one shot with an assist to Donnell Knight, but got the recordwith a one-handed dunk off a missed shot by Kyle Dodd with 1:33 left.

Chad Prewitt had 13 points and Knight 11 for the Sun Devils (11-11, 3-8),who got their first conference home win.

Curtis Allen and Michael Johnson scored 14 apiece for Washington (9-14,3-8). The Huskies (9-14, 3-8), who lost to Arizona by 20 points on Thursday,were swept in Arizona for the 11th time in the last 13 years.

Arizona State opened a 45-31 halftime lead, and built that to 75-49 with6:57 to play as Mason got free for layups after breaking Washington's press.

Washington went 6:48 without a field goal early in the first half, and Smithhad 10 points during a 19-2 run that sent the Sun Devils to a 25-9 lead with9:32 to go.

Smith made two free throws with 7:00 left, and Awvee Storey made a layin 20seconds later, opening a 33-14 lead.

But Allen, scoreless until then, had 10 points in the last 6:25 as theHuskies cut the deficit to 14 points by halftime.
