No. 20 Oregon Softball Falls To No. 12 Nebraska and Massachusetts
Feb. 10, 2001
Phoenix, Ariz. -- The No. 20 University of Oregon softball team lost a pair of games on day two at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. The Ducks lost 2-1 to No. 12 Nebraska in Game 1 and 1-0 to Massachusetts in Game 2. Oregon is now 6-4 overall heading into the final day of the tournament tomorrow.
'We didn't come out with a high level of intensity and we weren't mentally ready,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'We've got to start being prepared for every game.'
In Oregon's early game, sophomore Lisa Wangler didn't allow the Cornhuskers a hit until the fourth inning and held them scoreless until the fifth. Nebraska right fielder Danelle Arnold started a rally for the Cornhuskers with a single to right field. Short stop Amanda Buchholz advanced Arnold to third with a double to right field and Cindy Roethemeyer brought both runners in with a single to left field.
It was the only scoring Nebraska needed to hang on. Wangler (2-1) gave up just one more hit, but Oregon's only run came on a solo home run by Holly Ray in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ray now has four home runs on the season and has two home runs in Oregon's last four games.
In Game 2, Oregon pitcher Connie McMurren picked up her first loss of the season. McMurren (3-1) gave up just two hits to the Minutewomen, but Massachusetts catcher Jamie Cahalan's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning ended up being the winning run.
Oregon had eight hits to Massachusetts' two, but the Ducks left 11 runners stranded and the Minutewomen left four.
Oregon finishes the tournament tomorrow against Wisconsin at 7 a.m. and Texas at 11 a.m.Nebraska 2, Oregon 1
