No. 4 Cal Women's Swimming Narrowly Falls to No. 3 Stanford, 151-149

Feb. 10, 2001

Berkeley, CA - The No. 3 ranked Stanford women's swim team (6-1, 4-1) narrowly defeated No. 4 ranked California (6-3, 3-2), 151-149, Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Cardinal won nine of the meets 16 events, and despite the Bears placing first and second in the final event, the 400 free relay, Stanford had enough points to top Cal.

Some of the meet's highlights included Cal freshman Natalie Coughlin breaking the school record in the 100 fly with a time of 52.36. Coughlin also surpassed the old Spieker pool record of 52.68, held by Stanford's Misty Hyman from 1999 and the dual meet record of 53.21 set by the Bears Marylyn Chiang in 1999, as well as breaking Chiang's former school record of 52.40. In the 200 IM, Coughlin had a time of 1:59.31, breaking the old pool record of 2:01.20 set by Joscelin Yeo in 1999. Coughlin also placed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.07. In five Pac-10 dual meets this season, Coughlin has won all 15 individual races she has entered.

Other individual winners for Cal included senior Haley Cope in the 50 (23.36) and 100 free (50.95) and freshman Kyoko Yokouchi in the 200 back (2:00.17).

Some of Stanford's highlights were Hyman establishing a new Spieker pool record in the 100 back with a time of 53.66. The Cardinal's Tara Kirk broke the pool record in the 100 breast with a time a 59.51, and the 200 breast with a time 2:13.31. The Cardinals 400 medley relay team also broke a Spieker pool record with a time of 3:43.01.

'I thought the meet had a great atmosphere with a lot of good races,' said Cal coach Teri McKeever. 'When you have a meet with the difference being only two points, the swing could have been in any number of races. The last couple of years the meets between Cal and Stanford have been extremely close. This was a great tune-up for the Pac-10s. Stanford definitely had to be at their best to beat us today.'

The Bears next travel to the Pac-10 Championship, Feb. 22-24 in Federal Way, WA.
