Baseball Clinches Series Sweep Of Duke With 11-3 Win

Feb. 11, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Senior catcher Casey Myers was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and four RBI as the No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team clinched a series sweep of the Duke Blue Devils by winning Sunday's series finale 11-3 in front of 2,656 fans at Packard Stadium.

The win improves the Sun Devils 2001 record to 8-1 and have now won eight straight since opening the season with a loss. Duke falls to 1-6 on the year and have yet to beat the Sun Devils in nine career games. The Sun Devils outscored Duke 40-9 over the four games, with the ASU batters hitting a combined .417 and the pitchers turning in a spectacular 1.50 team ERA.

'We are starting to progress as a team and we beat a good team this weekend. They are a good ACC team with a lot of returning players that will win some big games this year,' said ASU head coach Pat Murphy. 'We are starting to focus and play more aggressive, but we still have a lot of work to do. This is a good sweep for us.'

The Sun Devils scored early with a single tally in the first. After reaching on a walk and stealing his 11th base of the season, junior center fielder Mel Stocker (Tucson) scored on a two-out single through the left side of the infield by junior second baseman Brooks Conrad (Spring Valley, Calif.). ASU extended its lead in the third inning with two more runs. Stocker plated ASU's second run with a sacrifice fly to score freshman left fielder Ryan McKenna (Elgin, Ill.). Senior right fielder Jonah Martin (Waianae, Hawai'i) put ASU up 3-0 when he scored on a sharp single by Myers.

Duke rallied in the fourth with a solo home run from first baseman Larry Broadway and in a bases loaded situation and only one out, ASU relief pitcher Franco Pezely (Taylorsville, Utah) came in and ended the rally with a pickoff and a strikeout. After the Sun Devils answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, Duke rallied in the fifth for two unearned runs to pull within one run.

Solid relief work by Pezely, Ty Johnson (Cherry Creek, Colo.), Drew Friedberg (Middleton, Wisc.) and Aaron Klusman (Phoenix) limited the Blue Devils to only four hits and two unearned runs over the last 6.2 innings, keeping ASU's lead safe down the stretch. Pezely took the win to improve to 1-0 on the season.

The Sun Devils opened the game up with seven runs in the last four innings. Senior Mike Lopez (Glendale) plated two runs in the fifth with a two-out single to left field to pull ASU away from Duke. ASU capped its scoring in the eighth with three runs and a Myers home run. After Stocker led the inning off with a hit by pitch, the senior All-American catcher crushed a line drive over the left field fence for his first round-tripper of the year and 33rd of his career. Freshman Jeremy West (Las Vegas) brought home the 11th run of the contest with a pinch-hit single up the middle to score senior Jeff Phelps (Yuma).

Myers (Case Grande) led the 18-hit Sun Devil attack with his first three-hit game of the year and his sixth multi-hit game of 2001. After starting a bit slow, Myers has been on a tear as of late with a six-game hitting streak, 17 RBI on the season and is hitting .359. He was 9-for-19 (.474) in the Duke series with nine RBI. Lopez ended with three hits to catapult his season average to .412. Phelps had two hits Sunday and ended the series 9-for-18 (.500) with three doubles and four RBI.

The Sun Devils will play their first midweek game of the year Tuesday when they host New Mexico State (8-1) to a 5 p.m. game at Packard Stadium. The Aggies are off the their best start in school history, but carry a career 0-19 record vs. ASU into the game.
