No. 6 Softball Splits Final Two Games At The Fiesta Bowl

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The sixth-ranked Arizona State softball team (5-1) split their final two games of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, dropping the first game to eighth-ranked Louisiana State, 4-2 in eight innings and shutting out 25th-ranked Utah, 4-0.
In the first game, both LSU and ASU went with their number one pitchers, holding each other scoreless through five innings. LSU opened the sixth inning with a solo home run for the first run, but the Sun Devils responded in the bottom of the inning when Shiloh Talanoa launched a solo home run to left field.
After a scoreless seventh inning, LSU started the eighth with a runner on second. The Tigers' Christy Conner then hit the team's second home run to put LSU up 3-1. With two outs in the innings, LSU then tagged its third home run of the day to make it 4-1.
The Sun Devils managed to get one run back off of LSU's Britni Sneed in the bottom of the eighth, but could not plate anymore. ASU's Kirsten Voak (2-1), allowed four hits with eight strikeouts as she suffered her first loss of the year.
In the final game against 25th-ranked Utah, Erica Beach (3-0) pitched another gem as she limited the Utes to only three hits while striking out seven for second consecutive shutout.
The Sun Devils posted three runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Missy Hixon hit into a fielder's choice, but the throw home was late as Kara Brun slide under the tag. Voak then singled to right field to score another run and Jennifer Forner walked in the third run.
ASU would tag on one more run in the sixth inning. Kristin Farber hit into a fielder's choice when the third baseman threw wide of second, allowing Forner to come all away around on the error.
Up next, Arizona State will host the Louisville Slugger Classic at Farrington Stadium, February 16-18. In addition to ASU, BYU, Illinois State, Iowa and Michigan State will compete in the three-day tournament.
