UW Men's Tennis Upsets 12th-ranked Pepperdine in Husky Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. - The 25th-ranked University of Washington men's tennis team upset No. 12 Pepperdine in the first day of the 2001 Husky Invitational. The Huskies (5-2, 1-1) secured the doubles point and earned singles victories from three individuals. Junior transfer Andrej Bizjak clinched the win for the Dawgs, defeating No. 80 Stefan Suter in two sets, (6-3, 6-4). The coaches agreed prior to competition, that play would end when a match was won, therefore UW's Matt Hanlin and Andy Posavac did not finish play.
Freshman Michael Rubin was sensational in only his second effort as a Husky, to improve to 2-0 on the season. At one point down 2-5 in the second set, Rubin rebounded with five straight points to win the match (6-1, 7-5) over Pepperdine newcomer Ryan Redondo. Senior Jeremy Berman also came up victorious in singles play, defeating No. 77 Chase Exon (6-4, 7-5).
Washington will face No. 7 Texas Christian in the championship match tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 12, at 1:30 p.m. The consolation round for Arizona State and Pepperdine will be played at 10 a.m.
