HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The Bears coach is in his second season at Cal and has a career record of 29-30 (.492)...Esquer, 35, became only the 10th coach in the long history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999...Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program...Esquer comes to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine since 1996...prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96...a shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha...he also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations...

BEAR NOTES: The 2001 Cal baseball team is 4-2 after three-game series versus Santa Clara and Brigham Young...the Bears swept Santa Clara Feb. 2-4 (7-3 at Santa Clara, 4-3 at Cal, 7-1 at Santa Clara) and then went 1-2 Feb. 8-10 at Evans Diamond against BYU (lost 2-1, won 5-3, lost 4-0)...the sweep of Santa Clara was the first time Bears had swept an opponent since sweeping Washington State in 1998...in the series against BYU, Cal was not able to take advantage of an outstanding pitching effort from junior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson in the first game...Hutchinson threw his first career complete-game with six hits, no earned runs, one walk and a career-high 10 strikeouts...Feb. 9, Cal was led by the pitching of senior David Cash (2-0) and freshman Matt Brown...Cash walked three batters and gave up a run in the first inning, then recovered to pitch 6.0 innings with seven hits, three runs, four walks and a career-high nine strikeouts...Brown replaced Cash in the seventh inning and earned his first collegiate save (3.0 innings, two hits, no runs, no walks, five strikeouts)...the Bears were down, 1-0, but scored three runs in the third inning...Cal freshman catcher, Chris Grossman, led off the inning with a single, and later the Bears tacked on four straight hits with RBI singles from sophomore David Weiner and freshman Conor Jackson, and a sacrifice fly from senior Clint Hoover...BYU tied the game, 3-3, but Cal was able to take the lead again in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Jackson and then got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by junior second baseman Carson White...at the plate, the Bears were led by Grossman, who was 2-for-3...Grossman, a redshirt freshman, began his collegiate career with five consecutive hits before finally grounding out to shortstop in the sixth inning...it is believed that no other Cal baseball player has ever began his college career with five consecutive hits...BYU won the third game of the series, 4-0, behind the pitching of Nate Fernley and two, two-run homers...Cal did not get a hit off of Fernley until Jackson's infield single in the fourth inning....the Bears other two hits off of Fernley was freshman pinch-hitter Spencer Wyman's single in the eighth inning and Jackson's double down the left field line in the ninth inning...Grossman is leading Cal with a .833 batting average, followed by junior college transfer White's .391 average and Hoover's .348 average...on the mound, the Bears have an impressive 2.00 team ERA, highlighted by Hutchinson's 0.60 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 15.0 innings...
