No. 6 Bears Down USD, 6-1

Feb. 10, 2001

SAN DIEGO, CA - The No. 6-ranked California women's tennis team returns to Berkeley after two solid wins over the weekend. The Bears (4-1, 2-1 in the Pac-10) defeated San Diego State, 6-1, Feb. 9, before traveling to USD (3-2) and winning a convincing 6-1 victory.

The two matches over the weekend are very similar, with Cal losing only one singles point, while not dropping a set to their competition in all winning singles matches for both contests. Against USD in doubles, the Bears lost at the No. 1 spot, yet managed to grab the doubles point. Senior Anita Kurimay teamed with freshman Raquel Kops-Jones, however USD's tandem of Polumbus and Manning proved tough to beat, as the Cal duo was handed an 8-5 loss.

In singles, Raquel Kops-Jones held down the No. 1 spot, downing Katarina Valkyora (6-2, 6-0), while four other singles players won without dropping a set to USD opponents. The only loss of the day came at No. 4, where freshman Catherine Lynch fell to Anja Tragardh.

The Bears take a break from dual competition this week and head to Wisconsin for the ITA Team Indoor championship, Feb. 15-18. When Cal returns, it will prepare for the Feb. 24 meeting at Stanford at 12 noon.
