No. 3 Men's Swimming and Diving Heads Across the Bay To Take On No. 6 California

THIS WEEK: The third-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team (7-0, 3-0 Pac-10) will close out the 2000-01 dual meet season against No. 6 California (5-0, 3-0 Pac-10) this Saturday, February 17 at 1 p.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, Calif.
LAST TIME OUT: The Stanford men's swimming team notched its seventh consecutive dual meet victory with a convincing 159-82 win over No. 8 USC ... Freshman Michael Bruce set a new pool record in the 200 breastroke with his winning time of 1:57.55 ... Stanford senior Adam Messner won the 200 free is a blistering time of 1:35.90 to automatically qualify for NCAAs ... Freshman Markus Rogan's winning time of 1:43.71 in the 200 back automatically qualified him for NCAA's in that event as well ... Stanford won eight of 11 events for the meet ... The Stanford relay team of Robinson, O'Bryan, Schnell and Messner, provisionally qualified for NCAA's with their winning time of 2:58.08 in the 400 free relay while the team of Bal, Robinson, O'Bryan and Guyman also provisionally qualified in the 400 medley relay (3:14.11) ... The Cardinal finished 1-2-3 in the 50 free with Anthony Robinson (20.37), Jeff Guyman (20.45) and Randall Bal (20.50) ... Dan Westcott and Steven Brown finished 1-2 in the 200 fly with times of 1:46.26 and 1:47.32 respectively ... Stanford also finished 1-2 in the 100 free with Jeff Guyman (44.54) and Bobby O'Bryan (44.61). Both times are provisionally qualifying times for NCAAs.
NOTES FROM AROUND THE POOL: Stanford has three different swimmers who have recorded the fastest time in the nation this season ... Adam Messner's 1:35.90 in the 200 free, Markus Rogan's 1:43.71 in the 200 back and Michael Bruce's 1:57.55 in the 200 breast are all tops in those events ... Randall Bal's time of 47.50 in the 100 back is the second fastest time nationally this season ... the Cardinal already have three swimmers who have automatically qualified for NCAA's (Messner, Rogan, Bruce) and another 14 athletes who have provisionally qualified for NCAAs (Jeff Guyman, Bobby O'Bryan, Anthony Robinson, John Waters, Matt Sorlien, Peter Marshall, Dan Westcott, Randall Bal, Rob Canales, Steven Brown, Michael O'Neil, Andrew Schnell, Greg Long, Scott Ransenberg) in different events (including relays) ... Stanford's 800 free relay team has the second-fastest time in the nation this season (6:35.58) ... the Cardinal have seven different swimmers who have nine of the top-10 times nationally in several events: Messner (No. 1, 200 free, No. 9, 500 free), Bruce (No. 1, 200 breast), Westcott (No. 9, 200 fly), Bal (No. 2, 100 back), Marshall (No. 6, 100 back, No. 7, 200 back), Rogan (No. 1, 200 back) and Brown (No. 7, 400 IM) ... the Cardinal have 11 swimmers who have 21 of the top-20 times nationally in different events ... all Stanford's times to this point are unshaved.
ABOUT CAL: Last season, Stanford defeated Cal, 137-106, in Palo Alto (Feb. 19) ... Stanford leads the all-time series with the Golden Bears, 89-13 ... Anthony Ervin has the nation's top collegiate time in the 100 free (43.10) and the second-best time in the 50 free (19.57) ... Daniel Kim has the nation's fifth best time in the 100 breast (55.14) while freshman Alex Lim checks in with the nation's seventh best time in the 100 back (48.40) ... they are coached by Nort Thorton, who led Cal to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1979 and 1980.
HEAD COACH SKIP KENNEY: After 21 seasons as head coach of Stanford University, Skip Kenney stands alone among his peers for his accomplishments in the pool and his character away from the pool. Kenney has led the Cardinal to seven NCAA titles and has also been named NCAA Coach of the Year six times, most recently in 1998. Kenney has coached a total of 86 All-Americans to 731 All-American honors, and has developed 37 NCAA Champions. He has guided the Cardinal to 19 straight conference titles, which is far and away the record for consecutive Pac-10 championships in any sport. Kenney has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year 12 times in the last 18 years.
