No. 3 UCLA Men's Tennis Serves Up 6-1 Win Over Portland

PORTLAND - The University of Portland men's tennis team played some oftheir best tennis this season, but could not overcome the heavy-hittersof third-ranked UCLA, as they lost 6-1. Portland is now 0-2 on theseason, both losses coming against top-ranked opponents.
In the biggest upset of the day however, the underdog Pilots won a pointin the singles matchup when freshman Matt Baer (Santa Barbara, CA)ousted 63rd ranked Lassi Ketola 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the No. 5 position. Itwas the third match of the day that went to three sets for Portland, andBaer made sure he won his with some deft hitting on the baseline. Ketoladeadlocked Baer at match point several times before winning his fourthgame, and when Baer served for the game, the two battled back and forthat deuce. Baer finally served an ace to gain the advantage, and then putKetola away on the next serve which Ketola got his racquet on, but couldnot return.
In the other matchups, the Pilots played strong tennis and made severalstunning plays, but could not hang on for wins. Portland's Peter Malacektook 33rd ranked Jean-Noel Grinda to three hard-fought sets at the No. 1spot, before falling 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. At No. 2, 53rd ranked German TobiasClemens outgunned Pilot Lars Anderson 6-3, 6-4. Porltand ace JeffNunnenkamp took Polish star Marcin Matkowski to three sets, losing 6-3,3-6, 6-2 at No. 3, and Nick Tostenrude could not handle 51st rankedErfan Djahangiri, falling 6-4, 6-2. At No. 6, UCLA's Travis Rettenmaierousted Quang Nguyen 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles, UCLA got the ball rolling, sweeping Portland for the doublespoint. At No. 1, Rettenmaier and Matkowski upended Portland's Baer andAnderson 8-5. Freshman Quinn Borchard and his partner Quang Nguyencouldn't do much against the strong-armed Ketola and Clemens at No. 2,losing 8-2. At the third position, Malacek and Tostenrude played well,but were downed by Grinda and Djahangiri 8-6.
The Pilots will get a little time off before taking on GonzagaUniversity on Saturday, February 24th at home. Match time is set for 11a.m.
