Delaney's Upset Sparks Beaver Win
Feb. 14, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Michael Delaney upset Oregon's seventh-ranked Shaun Williams at 125 pounds Wednesday night, igniting the 15th-ranked Beavers' 25-10 win over the 15th-ranked Ducks in Pacific-10 wrestling at Gill Coliseum. OSU (12-7 overall, 8-2 Pacific-10) finished the regular season on a three-meet win streak, next up are the Pacific-10 Championships on Feb. 25-26 at Oregon (7-8, 4-4).
'It wasn't a perfect score,' said OSU head coach Joe Wells, whose team avenged a 22-16 loss in Eugene on Dec. 13. 'But we might have helped ourselves in the seeding for the Pac-10 meet. It's a big win.'
OSU now holds a 95-22-4 edge over Oregon in the Civil War wrestling series that dates back to 1915. The Civil War is presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers.
Both teams were without a pair of starters, as OSU was also missing 165-pounder Jed Pennell in addition to Navarro and Oregon was without eighth-ranked heavyweight Eric Webb and 149-pounder Casey Hunt. Pennell and Navarro are expected to return to Oregon State's lineup for the Pac-10 meet.
Delaney, a sophomore filling in for injured 125-pounder Nathan Navarro, used a five-point move near the end of the first period to bring a crowd of 1,764 to its feet. He went on to an 11-8 win over Williams, as the final seconds ticked off, Delaney pounded the mat with joy.
'I had nothing to lose going out there,' Delaney said. 'I had a lot of help this week from guys in the room, especially Nathan - I listened to their advice, and it paid off.'
After Oregon's seventh-ranked Chael Sonnen started the meet with a major decision at 197 pounds, OSU's ninth-ranked heavyweight Jason Cooley received a forfeit due to Webb's absence and the Beavers never trailed. Delaney's win at 125 pounds began a run of five straight Beaver wins in contested matches that put OSU up 21-4.
'There's no question that Michael sparked the team tonight - he made a big move,' Wells said. 'Then Ben (Richards, OSU's 133-pounder) went out planning on having a good night.'
Richards, a senior wrestling his final home match, earned a 4-2 overtime decision over ninth-ranked Brian Watson, who had already beaten Richards twice this season.
'That was a lot to worry about, a lot to think about,' Richards said of combining his final home match, the Civil War and a nationally-ranked opponent. 'I needed that bad ... it was sweet.'
Richards nearly ended the match in regulation but couldn't complete a takedown before the buzzer. In overtime, it took 15 seconds for Richards to take Watson down and seal the victory.
OSU's sixth-ranked 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen was the other senior wrestling his final home match, and he left Gill Coliseum with a 1-0 win over 20th-ranked Eugene Harris. The Beavers also honored Paul Barron, the third senior on their roster, in pre-meet ceremonies.
Another Beaver to reverse the outcome of the December dual against the Ducks was 149-pounder Casey Horn, who scored a 13-6 victory over Tony Overstake. That came on the heels of Shane Cunanan's 7-3 victory for OSU over Kenny Cox at 141 pounds.
Oregon State also got a win from seventh-ranked Nathan Coy at 174 pounds, a 21-7 major decision over Luke Larwin. OSU's other backup, Jake Huffman, took Leif Williams into overtime before falling 14-12, Oregon's final win came in the last match of the night as seventh-ranked Doug Lee beat Isaac Weber 6-2.
The meet was the annual Beaver Wrestling Homecoming, and 27 former Oregon State wrestlers were in the crowd. Among them, the group on hand earned 33 individual conference championships, 22 All-America finishes and six individual national titles.
