Oregon Makes Strong Opening in Taylor Made/Waikoloa Invitational

Feb. 15, 2001

The Oregon men's golf team opened play in the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Invitational by shooting 28 strokes over par to finish in third place (308), while competing with 12 of the top-20 ranked teams in the country. Despite steady winds logged up to 40 miles per hour and gusts up to 60 mph, the current leader, Texas' Matt Dobyns, shot an even-par (70), with a low 33 in the opening round. The Texas squad finished day one leading the pack of 24 competing schools shooting a 302.

Rounding up the top-five schools behind Texas' 22-over-par 302, were TCU (307), Oregon (308), Arizona State (313), CSU-Bakersfield (315), and Brigham Young (317). Five players finished four strokes behind Dobyns, including Scott Volpitto of TCU, Arizona State's Matt Jones, CSUB's Mike Plate and Stephen Polanski of TCU.

The Ducks' top finishers were Chris Carnahan and Brandon Harnden who both shot a six-over-par, 76. Oregon's John Ellis wasn't far behind, shooting a 77, while teammates Matt Genovese shot a 79 and Aaron Byers shot an 81.

'It was a day of survival,' said men's head golf coach Steve Nosler. 'It tood a great deal of patience. I am proud of the kids. They stayed tough and hung in there. We just have to continue to play hard.'

Oregon will continue with round two on Friday morning with a 6:30 a.m. shot-gun start.
