Beavers Swipe First Win Of Baseball Season

Feb. 16, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Eric Stark stole home in the top of the 10th inning to boost Oregon State to an 8-7 win over co-host San Diego State in the San Diego Baseball Classic on Thursday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Beavers (1-3 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) continue the tournament Friday at 2 p.m. against Texas Tech at SDSU.

'I'm proud of our guys and the way they got through some adversity,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said of Thursday's win. 'It was important for us to get that first win.'

The Beavers took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth only to see the Aztecs (3-4, 0-0 Mountain West) rally and tie the game on Anthony Gwynn's two-out, run-scoring single off OSU reliever Stephen Copeland. Gwynn is the son of San Diego Padres' star Tony Gwynn, for whom the stadium is named. Earlier in the inning, the Beavers felt they had ended the game by throwing out runners stealing bases but both were called safe.

In the top of the 10th, Stark drew a one-out walk and Bryan Ingram followed with a single that sent Stark to second. Brian Barden bounced into a fielder's choice that erased Ingram at second base, leaving runners at first and third with two out and Andy Jarvis at the plate.

Barden walked off first base, inviting SDSU to chase him in a rundown play. As Barden was being run toward second, Stark broke for the plate, Aztec first baseman Rielly Embery's throw was low and Stark scored.

The run may have been costly, as Stark went down hard and eventually got up holding his shoulder. His condition was not known immediately after the game.

'It may be better for us to win in that situation,' Casey said of having to come back in the 10th inning. 'We're going to be in that situation again, and this is going to help us.'

In the bottom of the 10th, Pilar Amaya led off with a single for San Diego State but Landon Burt grounded into a double play. Chad Redfern came up with a bad-hop single past OSU third baseman Barden, but was then thrown out attempting to steal as shortstop Will Hudson made a diving tag to end the game.

Oregon State starter Thad Johnson received his second straight no decision for a strong effort. In eight-plus innings, the senior righthander gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk, striking out six, four of the hits off Johnson didn't get out of the infield.

'Thad pitched very well,' Casey said. 'We left him in maybe one more inning than we should have. He had great command tonight. And I thought Stephen pitched well - the pitch to Gwynn (for the game-tying single) was right where it should have been.'

Jarvis was 3-for-6 with a double for the Beavers, while Josh Carter was 2-for-4 and Ingram was 2-for-6. Curtis Davis added a two-run double for OSU and Hudson also drove in two runs.
