BEAR NOTES: The 2001 Cal baseball team is 5-2 after three-game series versus Santa Clara and Brigham Young and a 6-5 victory Tuesday at Pacific...at Pacific, freshman pinch hitter Brian Horwitz led off the top of the ninth with a double and later scored the winning run on a Tiger error after a single by senior right fielder Rob Meyer...senior David Cash earn his first save of the year in the ninth...the winning pitcher was freshman Matt Brown (1-0), but earlier fellow freshman Brian Montalbo was impressive, pitching 4.0 innings with one hit, two walks and a career-high seven strikeouts...at the plate, the Bears were led by Meyer, sophomore shortstop Brent Cook and freshmen Chris Grossman and Creighton Kahoalii...besides getting his clutch hit in the ninth, Meyer was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer in the fourth inning...Cook was 2-for-3 with a triple, Grossman was 2-for-5 with his first collegiate home run in the eighth inning and Kahoalii was 1-for-3 with his first collegiate home run in the third inning...the Bears went 1-2 Feb. 8-10 at Evans Diamond against BYU (lost 2-1, won 5-3, lost 4-0)...in the first game, Cal was not able to take advantage of an outstanding pitching effort from junior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson...Hutchinson threw his first career complete-game with six hits, no earned runs, one walk and a career-high 10 strikeouts...on Feb. 9, Cal was led by the pitching of Cash (2-0) and Brown...Cash walked three batters and gave up a run in the first inning, but went on to pitch 6.0 innings (seven hits, three runs, four walks, career-high nine strikeouts)...Brown replaced Cash and earned his first collegiate save (3.0 innings, two hits, no runs, no walks, five strikeouts)...the Bears were down, 1-0, but scored three runs in the third inning...Grossman led off the inning with a single, and later the Bears tacked on four straight hits with RBI singles from sophomore David Weiner and freshman Conor Jackson, and a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Clint Hoover...BYU tied the game, 3-3, but Cal was able to take the lead again in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Jackson and then got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by junior second baseman Carson White...at the plate, the Bears were led by Grossman, who was 2-for-3...Grossman, a redshirt freshman, began his collegiate career with five consecutive hits before finally grounding out to shortstop in the sixth inning...it is believed that no other Cal baseball player has ever began his college career with five consecutive hits...BYU won the third game of the series, 4-0, behind the pitching of Nate Fernley...Grossman is leading Cal with a .636 batting average, followed Meyer (.360), Horwitz (.353) and White (.346)...on the mound, the Bears have a 2.29 team ERA, led by Hutchinson's 0.60 ERA, 15 strikeouts in 15.0 innings...
