Feb. 16, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University football program has announced the signing of linebacker Kris Bonifas (Carmel, CA/Robert Louis Stevenson HS) to a National Letter-of-Intent beginning with the 2001-02 school year. Bonifas is the 18th student-athlete to sign a National Letter-of-Intent with the Cardinal football program this month.
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Bonifas is a Prep All-American who was rated the 10th best linebacker in the nation by PrepStar. He was also an All-Farwest selection at linebacker by SuperPrep, as well as All-State and All-Central Coast Section, after collecting 93 tackles and 16 sacks as a senior. He was also named the Monterey County and Mission Trail Athletic League Most Valuable Player last fall.
On the offensive side of the ball, he rushed 220 times for a league-leading 1,826 yards and 24 touchdowns last fall and was named First Team All-Mission Trail Athletic League and All-Monterey County at both a running back and linebacker. Bonifas, who was a First Team All-League defensive end and Second Team All-League running back as a junior, holds Robert Louis Stevenson school records for both rushing yards and touchdowns.
Among the 18 recruits signed by the Cardinal this month, 12 were named Prep All-Americas while four were named among the top 37 in the nation by SuperPrep Magazine. As usual, Stanford recruited on a national basis. The Cardinal's 18 recruits come from 10 states, including six from California, three from Georgia, two from Texas and Michigan and one each from Louisiana, Montana, Florida, Colorado, Washington and Illinois.
The Cardinal opens the 2001 season against Boston College on September 8 at Stanford Stadium.
