Nicholson, Davis Key Beavers' Win

Feb. 16, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Scott Nicholson pitched a seven-hitter and Oregon State overcame a four-run deficit to beat Texas Tech 5-4 on Friday afternoon in the San Diego Baseball Classic at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Curtis Davis drove in three runs for OSU (2-3 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10), including the tying and winning runs with a seventh-inning single.

Oregon State, which had opened the tournament with an 8-7, 10-inning win over co-host San Diego State on Thursday night, meets Cal-Riverside on Saturday at 10 a.m. at SDSU. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340), as can the Beavers' tourney finale on Sunday at 9 a.m. against No. 19 Oklahoma.

Against Texas Tech (7-5, 0-0 Big 12), OSU was without centerfielder Eric Stark, who separated his left shoulder sliding home with the winning run against San Diego State. Stark will miss the rest of the tournament, then have the shoulder examined further after the Beavers return to Corvallis.

'We had a couple guys hurt,' said Oregon State coach Pat Casey, who also dropped catcher Bryan Ingram down the lineup due to a sore hamstring. 'We talked about it being early in the year and us still having to find a playing rhythm, the main thing right now is finding a way to win and get it done, and we did that today.'

Nicholson, making his first appearance of the season, blanked the Red Raiders over the final four innings and retired eight of the last nine hitters he faced. He walked one and struck out two for the game, Texas Tech scored its runs on two-run homers by Kerry Hodges in the first inning and Gera Alvarez in the fifth.

'I just felt out of sync and I was trying to get back in the swing,' said Nicholson, who surprised himself with the complete game in his first outing of the season. 'I was just trying to stay strong. My rhythm was off, but I had to stick with it and make adjustments when they needed to be made. It was one of those days when I didn't have my best stuff, but I was finding a way to get them out.'

Said Casey: 'Scott pitched real well, and I thought we made some mistakes early, offensively, that kept us from scoring. But the guys stayed with it and made some things happen.'

OSU's persistence began paying off in the bottom of the sixth, when Andy Jarvis started the inning with a double off Red Raider starter Chad Ertel. With one out, Davis boomed a pitch from reliever Mike Larsen off the centerfield wall for a triple to drive in Jarvis, Davis scored on Chris Biles' single to make it 4-2.

Oregon State's surge continued in the seventh inning as Will Hudson's walk, Kerisi Reynolds' bunt single and Jarvis being hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. Josh Carter grounded out to first base, driving in one run and moving runners to second and third for Davis. Davis watched a ball from reliever Blake McGinley, then poked a line drive into left-centerfield to easily drive in both runners and put OSU in front 5-4.

Davis has a history of key hits at Tony Gwynn Stadium. On Thursday, Davis had a two-run double against San Diego State, in 1999, he doubled home the game's only run as B.R. Cook pitched a 1-0 one-hitter against Oklahoma State, and in a 1998 exhibition game against CETYS of Mexico, Davis was 2-for-3 with a double.

'I like this place - I don't know what it is,' said Davis, who is batting .545 on the young season. 'I'm just seeing the ball real well right now. This is a good win for us, coming from behind like that.'

Texas Tech had its best chance at tying the game in the top of the eighth, when Alvarez led off with a double down the leftfield line. Nicholson coaxed a grounder to shortstop from Anthony Arnerich, leaving Alvarez at second, Alvarez then tried to steal third and was easily thrown out by Ingram. The Red Raiders did not put the tying run on base after that, and the game ended with reserve leftfielder Jake Postlewait running in and making a sliding catch of Jason Rainey's fly ball.
