Cal Baseball Falls at Loyola Marymount, 9-8

LOS ANGELES, CA - Loyola Marymount reliever Brian Felton struck out Cal pinch hitter Curtis Johnson with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to preserve a 9-8 lead and even the series between the two schools. The Bears go to 6-3 on the season, while the Lions improved to 8-4. Cal had won game one of the series Friday, 14-6.
The Bears had trailed 9-4 after six innings, having allowed Loyola Marymount to score six runs in the fourth inning, before mounting a comeback by scoring two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Cal scored its two runs in the seventh on a two-run homer by junior second baseman Carson White. In the eighth, freshman Brian Horwitz led off with a triple, and was later scored on a two-out double by sophomore David Weiner. Weiner then scored on an RBI single up the middle by freshman Chris Grossman to get the Bears within 9-8.
In the top of the ninth, senior Clint Hoover led off with a single. White then advance Hoover to second with a sacrifice bunt. LMU's Felton came in and was able to strikeout Derek Ayres before walking Horwitz and Spencer Wyman to load the bases. Felton was then able to strikeout Johnson on a full-count high fastball.
The winning pitcher for Loyola Marymount was reliever James Clelland (2-0, 4.0 innings, three hits, three runs, no walks, four strikeouts). Felton earned his second save of the season. The losing pitcher for the Bears was freshman Matt Brown (1-1, 3.7 innings, eight hits, six runs, two walks, three strikeouts). Brown had relieved Cal starter Ryan Atkinson (3.3 innings, four hits, three runs, three walks, three strikeouts) with one out in the fourth inning.
At the plate, Cal was paced by Hoover, who went 4-for-5 with a double. Weiner (2-for-5 double, two RBI), Horwitz (2-for-4, double, triple) and sophomore John Baker had two hits apiece. Baker was 2-for-2 with an RBI double in the second inning and hit his first collegiate home run in the fourth inning.
Cal will next face Loyola Marymount in the third game of the three-game series, Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
