Currier Dominates As Baseball Shuts Out UCLA, 6-0
Feb. 17, 2001
LOS ANGELES -- Senior pitcher Rik Currier threw eight shutout innings, allowing only two hits Saturday, and the USC Trojans (No. 1-ESPN/USA Today Baseball Weekly, No. 2-Baseball America, No. 3-Collegiate Baseball) shut out the host UCLA Bruins, 6-0, in a non-conference game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Currier (3-0) struck out seven and walked two for the Trojans (7-2) while freshman Fraser Dizard retired the Bruins (8-3) in order in the ninth to secure the victory. The loss snapped UCLA's eight-game winning streak.
Currier did not allow a UCLA player to reach second until the eighth when the Bruins had runners at first and second with no outs, but he retired the next three batters to end the threat.
It was the first shutout by the USC pitching staff since a 10-0 shutout of Virginia Commonwealth on May 28, 1999, in the NCAA First-Round Regional at Dedeaux Field. It was also the 19th two-hitter thrown by USC since 1976.
The strength of Currier and teammate Mark Prior has given USC one of the best 1-2 pitching combos in the nation. Currier and Prior are now a combined 5-0 this season (43 1/3 IP, 19 H, 5 ER, 8 BB, 55 SO).
Senior Josh Persell led off the Trojans' second with a single to right. On an 0-2 count, UCLA's Jon Brandt (2-1) plunked senior Bill Peavey with a pitch for runners at first and second. Utilizing a hit-and-run play, junior Brian Barre singled to right, scoring Persell. Peavey would score later on a ground ball to second by freshman Michael Moon.
An RBI single in the third by Persell gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead as USC would complete its scoring with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Both teams will complete their non-conference series tomorrow at 1 p.m., weather permitting. If rain postpones the game, a makeup date has been set for Monday (Feb. 19) at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Tomorrow's game will also be broadcast on www.usctrojans.com, the first baseball broadcast of the 2001 season.
