Jarvis Homers Key OSU Rally

Feb. 17, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Andy Jarvis homered twice in Oregon State's nine-run seventh inning as the Beavers rallied for an 18-10 win over Cal-Riverside on Saturday in the San Diego Baseball Classic at Tony Gwynn Stadium. OSU (3-3 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10), which has won three straight, concludes the tournament against Oklahoma on Sunday at 9 a.m. at San Diego State.

'We had to score more runs than we wanted to to win,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team trailed 9-4 midway through the game. 'But our focus right now is on doing that - winning games. Fortunately, we were able to hang on long enough and score a lot of runs.'

Jarvis set career-highs for homers, hits and runs batted in against UCR (3-8, 0-0 Big West), going 4-for-5 with six RBIs. The sophomore first baseman led off OSU's big inning with a solo homer to left-centerfield, then capped it with a three-run homer to right-center as the Beavers went from a 10-6 deficit to a 15-10 lead.

Jarvis wasn't sure whether he'd hit two homers in one inning before.

'Maybe when I was 16, in like Mickey Mantle League,' Jarvis said. 'On the first one, he went to two (balls) and oh (strikes) on me and threw a fastball, I didn't try to do anything special lik go the other way, I just tried to stay on it. The wind was blowing out to left-center then, and it got out.'

The second homer came on a first-pitch curveball.

'I got in front of it a bit but I hit it good,' Jarvis said. 'I wasn't sure if it would go out, but I knew they wouldn't catch it - it would drop or go out. That was big for us. We were up a couple and that almost put the game away. It killed their momentum a bit.'

Sandwiched between Jarvis' homers were a two-run single by Bryan Ingram and run-scoring singles by Chris Biles, Josh Howard and Brian Barden. OSU tacked on three more runs in the eighth, getting a two-run double by Barden and a sacrifice fly by Jarvis.

By that time, Paul Williams had restored order in Oregon State's bullpen. The junior righthander had come in to shut the door on UCR's five-run fifth inning, he eventually earned the win with three innings of work, allowing one run one three hits and two walks, striking out one.

'It was big for Paul to have some success,' Casey said. 'And they (the Highlanders) had it going pretty good right then and had a good lead - he came in and responded.'

Stephen Copeland finished the game for the Beavers, retiring the final five hitters.

'We know there are some things we've got to get better at - some mental things, and out of the bullpen,' Casey said. 'But the good thing is, the last two guys (Williams and Copeland) came in and threw real well.'

The Beavers had a season-high 24 hits against UCR. Barden was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and drove in four runs, Josh Carter was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, Howard was 3-for-4 and Ingram came off the bench to go 3-for-3.

OSU sophomore lefthander Mark McLemore will make his first career start Sunday against Oklahoma.

'The challenge is going to be a lot greater,' Casey said of meeting the Sooners. 'We've got to get a good start out of Mark, because we're not going to have a rested bullpen, and we're going to have to score some runs.'
