No. 6 Softball Spilts Two Games At Louisville Slugger Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The sixth-ranked Arizona State softball team (8-2) split a pair of games today during the second day of the Louisville Slugger Classic Tournament at Farmington Stadium. The Sun Devils shutout Michigan State (0-4), 6-0 and fell to 13th-ranked Iowa (3-1), 3-1.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Kristen Swetel (1-0) pick up her first career win as she pitched six shutout innings, allowing only four hits. Erica Beach came in for the final inning, striking out one.
ASU posted three runs in the fourth innings. Kara Brun singled to lead off the inning, then after one out, Sara Kahler singled to send Brun to third. Shiloh Talanoa singled up the middle to bring Brun home and Swrtel singled to score Kahler. Stacey Farnworth then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the third run.
The Sun Devils would tack on two more runs in the fifth, courtesy of a Brun two-run home run to center field, and one more in the seventh.
Brun went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Talanoa also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the second game, ASU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kristin Farber singled to lead off. After a sacrifice to advance her to second, Nichole Thompson then singled to right field to bring Farber home.
However, Beach's (5-1) scoreless streak of 27 innings came to an end in Iowa's fourth inning as the Hawkeye's would put three runs on the board, two by the way of a home run.
The Sun Devils would have several other chances to score, but could not push any across the plate. ASU left nine runners on base, while Iowa left just one.
